About the Programme

Biotechnology is an essential component of Life Science that can be applied to various developing sectors of special interest such as Health care, Agriculture, and Environment. Developing countries like India lack the necessary qualified manpower to exploit such variant technologies. Further, Biotechnology, as practiced today, requires multi-dimensional inputs including modern biological and technological sciences. During the contemporary times, Biotechnology has reached the zenith of billion-dollar Global industrial sector. The Department of Biotechnology at Rathinam College of Arts and Science was established in the year 2018. The post graduate program in Biotechnology will certainly be churning out not just graduates with knowledge acquired through rote learning but will be producing students who will be employable and also create employment which is the need of the hour. The programme per se will also provide excellent opportunities for the very many rural and semi urban Biotechnology undergraduates to pursue post-graduation with the exemplary state of art facilities for practical training and skill development. Since the college has a stand-alone Atal Incubation Center (AIC), post graduates who join the department with an urge to establish as an entrepreneur will have a bright chance of sophistication of the skill sets and to seed the idea to develop into a prototype; which can be developed to a successful enterprise through the AIC.

Program Educational Objectives


Scientific Knowledge and Technical Skill – Enable students to apply the knowledge acquired on the intricacies of cellular behavior and regulatory processes in application oriented studies


Preparedness – Student shall gain expertise in the industry required skills blended with theory to foster career in different sectors of industry, agriculture, and applied research


Research impetus – Students shall be sensitized in the Basic and applied research in Industrial Biotechnology, Agriculture and Environmental Biotechnology, Fermentation technology, and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology


Leadership and Ethically competent– Students shall emerge with professional leadership skills and an irrevocable commitment towards lifelong learning maintaining integrity and ethics in all facets of core and applied jobs/entrepreneurial ventures

Course Objective

The objectives of the course are to

  • Provide a strong theoretical background to the stake holders blended with adequate practical and industrial exposure
  • Make a platform available which would enable the students to be role/industry ready
  • Enable competencies for problem solving skills through cutting edge research in niche areas of biotechnology and applied sectors
  • Expose the students to the nuances of research
  • Foster competencies which shall enable the stake holders to crack competitive examinations both at the National and International levels
  • Prepare the students for a rewarding career at the global level
  • Expose the stake holders to newer branches of Biotechnology like Systems Biology, Pharmaceutics, Neuroscience, Marine Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology and Green chemistry

The Department has the state of the art facilities to providing holistic training in basic and applied Biotechnological experiments. The facilities include Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Culture, General Analytical and Instrumentation with equipment like PCR, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Gel Documentation System, Fermenter, Blotting Unit, Biosafety cabinets, CO2 incubator, AGE, PAGE

Activities in the Department of Biotechnology are holistic, reflecting the diversity of modern Biotechnology. The Department aims to provide an ideal milieu for inter-disciplinary, collaborative and cross disciplinary activities. The faculty members of the department are involved in organizing various student centric, co-curricular and extracurricular activities; proactively encourage Bio-entrepreneurship.
